Bonjour encore!
Hello again everyone!
We just finished our first full 5 day week of the year! It was a great week and it’s been nice to have everyone in the classroom get to know each other a bit more.
We continued talking about Terry Fox this week and found inspiration in him for English when we wrote about our heroes. We talked a lot about character traits that make someone a hero and why we might look up to them. After writing about them, we made little playing cards with their picture and bio. Below you can see a few examples:
We also finished our Terry Fox posters and thought you might like to see how they turned out!
For French and Social studies we started talking about Identity. We discussed our unique identities and how they are made up of so many different things: our interests, talents, families, physical characteristics, names, and lots more! We made identity maps highlighting our unique selves!
Next, we discussed how we can also have shared identities within our communities - big and small. We talked about how we're all a part of École Tuscany's community, as well as that of Alberta, Canada, and the planet Earth. We read the book “Circles All Around Us" by Brad Montague and drew our own example of these circles for a student in our class and an imaginary student somewhere far away.
We used Google Maps to visualize where we are in relation to the rest of the world. We then watched some very fascinating videos illustrating how tiny we are in the galaxy relative to other planets, stars, and galaxies. You can click on this link and/or this one to the videos in case your students would like to watch them again! I had several requests from students to share the links with you..they were absolutely transfixed by these size comparisons (and to see how small we are!!)
That's all for now. Next week we will be participating in the Terry Fox run on Wednesday September 22nd at 2:00pm! As well, the school will be hosting a virtual Open House on Thursday evening and Friday morning. I have sent you an email containing the details of how to access the webinars!
Have a great weekend!
Mme Anderson
